Sonal Mansingh

Sonal Mansingh was born on April 30,1944 and is an Indian classical dancer and choreographer of Odissi dancing style and is also proficient in other classical dances including Bharatnatyam,Chhau and Kuchipudi. Her dancing career started in 1962 post her arangetram in Mumbai and in 1977 she founded Centre for Indian Classical dances in New Delhi.Dance took her all over the world.She has been the recipient of various awards as well, such as,Padma Bhushan in 1992,Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987 and the Padma Vibhushan  which is the India’s second highest civilian award in 1987 in 2003 which made her the second woman dancer of India to receive such an honour after Balasaraswati .The she received Kalidas Samman of Madhya Pradesh government in 2006 and on April; 21,207 she was conferred Doctor of Science by G.B.University,Uttarakhand at Pantnagar and Doctor of Literature by Sambalpur University.She also got the National award for best non feature film.


  • In 1987 she received the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
  • In 1991 she was honored with the Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award.
  • In 1992 she became the youngest recipient to be awarded Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in the Republic of India.
  • In 1994 she was conferred the Indira Priyadarshini Award.
  • In 2003 she was honored with Padma Vibhusan, the second highest civilian award in the Republic of India. She was the second Indian woman dancer to receive this honor.
  • In 2006 she became the recipient of Kalidas Samman of the Madhya Pradesh Government.
  • In 2007 she received an honorary doctorate of science degree from the G.B. Pant University, Uttarakhand.
