The “Guru of Contemporary Dance in India” or Shiamak Dawar was born on 19th October 1961 in Mumbai, India. He is regarded as one of the first people to have introduced Indian theatre and cinema to Western dance styles such as Jazz and Contemporary. His style has evolved and is now classified as the Shiamak Syle that fuses together Western forms of dancing with Bollywood or Classical Indian dance. He also started the Shiamak Davar’s Institute of Performing Arts which is one of the most prestigious institutes for dance in the country. The Victory Arts Foundation was also started by him to help the underprivileged and the differently abled so that everyone could know the power of expression and dance.
His career rose up with the choreography of “Dil Toh Pagal Hai” which won him an award and established him as a force to reckon with. He went on to choreograph for many films including Taare Zameen Par, Dhoom 2, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi among many others. Shiamak’s career extended with overseas celebrities and he has worked with international stars such as Sting, Bryan Adams and Eddie Grant. The biggest Indian stage musical, Zangoora, is also choreographed by him and is still a successfully running in The Kingdom of Dreams situated in Gurgaon. Other than being the face of contemporary dance in India, Shiamak Davar has managed to achieve many awards also. The choregraphy of Dil Toh Pagal Hain earned him the President’s National Award.
