Rukmini Devi Arundale

Born on 29th February 1904, Rukmini Devi was one of the premier figures of dance who was responsible for the revival of the dance form Bharatnatyam in it’s original ‘sadhir’ style. She died on 24th February 1986 but during her lifetime, she was able to shape India and re-establish Indian traditional culture in an important way. Rukmini Devi rebelled against her times which regarded Bharatnatyam as a low and vulgar style of dance in the 1920’s. The dance was associated with Devdasis(the temple deities who performed the dance) who were misunderstood to be prostitutes. Although belonging to the upper-cast, Rukmini Devi, influenced by the spiritual value of dance, adopted the style and not only did she master it but also performed it publicly.

In 1956, the artist was awarded the Padma Bushan and she was also a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1967. India Today also named her, for her revivalist work, among the ‘100 People Who Shaped India”.
