Paul Taylor

Paul Taylor was born on July 29,1930 in Wilkinsburg,Pennsylvania.He was interested in swimming and painting .He attended Syracuse University through a scholarship and then he took up dance training in the year 1951 which became his passion.He then went to The Julliard School in New York City and has done various choreography works  and has started his own company.He has been linked with various companies like  the Royal Danish Ballet, Paris Opéra Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater through his works .He has worked with various artists such as Tharon Musser,Ellsworth Kelly,Jaspe Johns,Thomas Skelton,Gene Moore,Mathew Diamond and many more.He has been the recipient of various awards such as Kennedy Center Honors in 1992 and Emmy Award.His dances include  Three Epitaphs (1956), Aureole (1962), Scudorama(1963), The Book of Beasts (1971), Esplanade and Runes (1975), Cloven Kingdom (1976),Aphrodisiamania (1977), Airs (1978) and many more.



  • He is the recipient of 3 Guggenheim Fellowships and a number of honorary doctorates and fine arts degrees.
  • In 1969, he was knighted by the French government as ‘Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’.
  • In 1989, he was one of the few elected members of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.
  • He won an Emmy Award for ‘Speaking in Tongues’, which was produced by WNET/New York.
  • In 1992, he received the Kennedy Center honors.
  • In 1995, he received the Algur H. Meadows Award for ‘Excellence in the Arts’.
  • He was presented the ‘Legion d’Honneur’ for his ‘exceptional contributions to French culture’, in 2000.
