Mrinalini Sarabhai

Mrinalini Sarabhai was born on 11May 1918 and was an Indian classical dancer,choreographer and instructor .She was also known as the founder of the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts  which is an institute for training in dance,drama,music and puppetry in Ahmedabad. She has many awards and recognition of her contributions to art.She has trained over 18,000 students in Bharatnatyam and Kathakali.She has been awarded by the Indian government with the national civilian awards Padma Bhushan in 1992 and the Padma Shri in 1965.She was credited with the Degree of Doctor of Letters by the University of East Angila,Norwich,UK in 1997 She was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship and was nominated to the Executive Committee of the International Dance Council,Paris in 1990.Apart from choreography for more than three hundred dance dramas she has also written poetry,novels,plays ans stories for children .She is also among the trustees of the Sarvodaya International Trust.

Achievement

Mrinalini Sarabhai was the recipient of many awards such as the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan- two of the highest civilian awards in India. In 1968, the Mexican government recognized her work and awarded her a gold medal for her choreography for the Ballet Folklorico
