Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai

Minakshisundaram Pillai, born in 1869, is regarded as the pioneer of Pandanallur style of Bharatnatyam. He was from the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu and was a revered guru in his birthplace Pandanallur. He was a descendant of the Tanjore Quartet which comprised on four brothers who composed the main masterpieces for Bharatnatyam in the 19th century. Pillai’s legacy is found in the Pandanullar style which is most popular for its choreography. The choreography of the Nine or Ten Tanjore Quartet pada-varnams, which is considered to be the gems of the style, is credited to Minakshi Sundaram Pillai. He had also trained many famous Devadasis (temple dancers) during his lifetime. His disciples also went on to achieve great lengths and train famous contemporary dancers.
