Lester Horton

Lester Horton was born on January 23,1906 in Indianapolis,Indiana,U.S.He was a dancer and a choreographer who is credited with the launch of modern dance  movement in Los Angeles and is known for establishing the country’s first racially integrated dance company.In a short while he introduced a dance technique that was continued in the 21st century by the instructors.Initially he was inspired by Native American dance and the performances of dancers like Ruth St.Denis and Ted Shawn and the Denishawn dancers.He studied with Japanese dancer and choreographer Michio Ito in Los Angeles from whom he learned to blend pops into his choreography and dance In the dramatic theater.His early choreographies were, Kootenai War Dance (1931) and Voodoo Ceremonial (1932).He has also worked in films like, Moonlight in Havana (1942), White Savage (1943), Phantom of the Opera (1944), and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (1945).
