James Cagney

James Francis Cagney Jr. was born on July 17,1899 was a dancer and an American actor both in films and on stage.He was known for his energetic style  and performances and vocal style he was very much appreciated and had won various awards for his numerous performances.He is best known for his performances in the movies like The Public Enemy (1931),Taxi(1932),White Heat(1949), and Angels with Dirty Faces(1938).He was ranked eighth among the list of greatest male stars of Classic Hollywood Cinema by the American Film Institute.His autobiography,Cagney by Cagney reflected his philosophy of acting .He has been a recipient of Oscar for best actor for Tour-de-force.He was praised for his performance in the film Tribute to a Bad Man .It is believed that he could understand method acting and used his own personal experience to create characters and performances and encouraged others too.


  • Cagney played Rocky Sullivan in 1938’s “Angels with Dirty Faces”. He earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for the role.
  • In 1942, he played George M. Cohan, considered his best, in the musical biography “Yankee Doodle Dandy”. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, and won three, including Best Actor for Cagney.
  • In 1974, he received the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award. He also received the Kennedy Center Honors, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Ronald Reagan
