History of Azonto Detail

Ghana is said to be the birthplace of the Azonto. The dance has come from the Kpanlogo dance, which is a traditional dance of the coastal Greater Accra region. Initially, the steps involved the mimicry of everyday activities. For instance, the movements or steps of the dance would often depict everyday actions such as swimming, praying, boxing, ironing or washing. However, the dance has gone through considerable changes and now involves complex footwork and acrobatic movements in addition to the bent knee and hip movements that are characteristic of most African dances. The term ‘Azonto’ has been derived from the word ‘Azontoa’ which refers to a wayward girl. It was initially a rude reference to women who were disliked but after the growing popularity of the word, the term seems to be more acceptable presently. Azonto is currently gaining popularity especially on social media after Ghanaian artists have begun to share their music videos on youtube and other sites. Homemade instructional videos on the dance by UK residents from African countries have also led to increase in the popularity of the style.
