A celebrate Bharatnatyam dancer and choreographer known for Pandanallur style Indian classical dance form of Bharatnatyam. She is also the founder of ‘Dippashika’ which is a center for fine arts in Chennai established in 1984.She also teaches Bharatnatyam there.She was the youngest dancer to win the President’s award of Padmasri after Vyjayantimala. She has also won the Sangeet Natak Akademi for music,dance and drama and then the recipient of Padma Bhushan by Government of India in 2004.Her debut was at an early age of 9/12 under Indian Institute of Fine Award,Madras and was conferred the Natya Kala Bhushan award.She was much appreciated at the International Dance Festival of Theater organized by the Sarah Bernhardt Theater de la Ville. She has won many awards throughout her life.The documentary called Lasya Kavya is based on her and has won National Film Award for Best Arts/Cultural Film.
For her contribution in dance, Alarmel Valli became the youngest dancer to receive the Padma Bhushan in 2004. She has also received the Padma Sri conferred by the President of India. The State Government of Tamil Nadu also awarded her the Kalaimamani. Being internationally recognized, the French government conferred on her the prestigious Chevalier of Arts and Lettres and the Grande Medaille. In addition to numerous other awards received by Alarmel Valli is the Award of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
