This dance form emerged during the time when slaves from Africa were brought over to America. American interpretations of this dance are that the movements represented those of the slaves. While Africans explain the movements signify adolescents breaking away from their parent’s home and becoming mature and responsible. The dance is free-spirited, lighthearted and pleasurable.
